Science Fair
Scent of Revelation Part III Section 26
Summer of 1985 – the City/Spring 1980 – the City
“Let’s go downtown and ride elevators.” I say.
Once, when I was about fourteen, I came to the city for a science fair. Ethan, Tyler, and I had roomed together. We managed to sneak out in the middle of the night, and we rode the glass elevators up and down until a security guard told us to go back to our room. Ty got a bottle from his father’s liquor cabinet and put it in his suitcase. We drank some before we got on the elevator, and we were buzzing well.
I remember Tyler looked queasy on the elevator, and I remember his mad dash to the bathroom. And me, needing to pee badly and not feeling so good myself. Mostly, though, I remember Ethan wanting to play cards and trying to figure out if we could watch an X-rated movie without a chaperone finding out.
“We’d love to Jer, we’d love to Jer, we’d love to Jer…” Gana is saying this over and over, and I realize I have been lost in my haunted thoughts again.
“Let’s go then.”
